Non-completion of programme within the Maximum Duration of Study

Any student who fails to complete his diploma/degree programme within the maximum duration shall be withdrawn from the programme. However, should there be any extenuating circumstances, the School may recommend to the Senate extension of the maximum period as may be justified by such circumstances. Such an extension shall not exceed half of the minimum duration for a full-time study.

Modes of Study

  1. Postgraduate Diploma: A study for the Postgraduate Diploma shall be pursued by coursework to be examined in written papers together with research work to be presented in a project report. The course units assigned to the project shall not exceed six (6) units. 

    Master’s Degree: A study for the Master’s degree shall be pursued either by:-

    • Comprehensive coursework to be examined in written papers together with original research work to be presented in a project report. The credit units assigned to the project report shall not be less than six (6) units; or
    • Coursework to be examined in written papers together with original research work to be presented in dissertation. The credit units assigned to the dissertation shall be less than six (6) units.

     

    Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy Degree: A study for the M.Phil./Ph.D degree shall be pursued by:

    • Comprehensive coursework to be examined in written papers together with seminars. No research work shall be required;
    • Upgrading of candidates who score CGPA of at least 4.0 (on a 5-point scale) to full Ph.D. programme.

     

    Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree: A study for the Ph.D. Degree shall be   pursued either by:

    • Course work to be examined in written papers together with original research work to be presented in thesis. The credit units assigned to the thesis shall not be less than twelve (12) units or
    • A study for the Ph.D. degree shall be pursued by comprehensive research to be presented in a thesis; but a Department can prescribe a number of relevant courses and/or seminars, which the candidate shall pass in order to graduate. Grades obtained in such courses or seminars shall be for record purposes only.
